|The best way to learn how to speak English well is to speak English! If this sounds obvious to you, then great! You are just the students I'm looking for!
This class will provide a warm and friendly atmosphere where you can practice and hone your English skills. Working in pairs and groups, you will have plenty of opportunities to speak and listen to English.
Whatever your reasons and purposes for studying English, this class will help you to advance your abilities. We will focus on developing your communication skills, not only in the spoken language but also with non-verbal communication skills and strategies too.
Many aspects of communication are rooted in their cultural contexts. In fact ‘culture’ is said to be the fifth language skill. Learning about aspects of British and Western societies will be another way you will enrich and develop your ability to use and understand English.

|Hello. My name is Huw Tyler. I will be teaching here on Thursday evenings when the new term begins. I have taught a wide variety of English classes using many different methodologies although this will be the first time for me to teach a Nichiei English class. I hope I will be able to use my experience to make your class an enjoyable and enriching experience. So, how am I going to do that?
A friend of mine told me once, “ Don’t teach the lesson; teach the students.” Another friend of mine, who subsequently wrote a best selling English course book suggested that, “ I take advantage of my students.” Basically, what they were saying is that it is not only the teacher who can bring things into the classroom, the students can too. Your knowledge, your experience, your opinions are valuable assets in the language classroom. The classes should be about you so I welcome your input as a source of motivation for your and, hopefully, the other members of the class. Everybody likes a good story so please tell us yours.
Now, you’re probably thinking, “What’s the teacher going to be doing while we are giving him our input?” Well, that’s a good question. Like you, I want to enjoy our classes so I will give you some activities which are intended to help you feel comfortable studing together in a group. Also, from time to time, I’ll give you exercises to heighten your awareness of common errors and difficulties for Japanese learners of English. In addition, please feel free to tell me what you personally find difficulty with when you use English and, I’ll address those issues in our classes. Your are the most important element in this class so your opinions and feedback will help me find the best way to proceed with our lessons. Together, I want us to create the best learning environment we can to ensure that you all benefit from our time together.
Look forward to seeing you soon.
|This course is intended for students who are able to communicate with a fair degree of confidence in a variety of situations, yet need to improve their knowledge of and proficiency in English comprehension and Production. Through the exploration of real life themes, students will be given a lot of opportunity to speak, listen, read and write in a variety of contexts. Activities presented in each theme will allow the student to practice and then review each topic. A textbook will be chosen for the year though some weeks other materials will be used and if you want to study a specific topic lessons can be tailored to your needs.|
